Are you relocating to Avon or buying a house in the surrounding area, or perhaps just wondering about things to do nearby? You will find there to be a host of exciting activities to do right in your own backyard.

Miller Nature Preserve

Situated on Route 83 in Avon, Miller Nature Preserve resides on 78 acres of beautifully wooded land. Located in the heart of Avon, much of this preserve was donated by Buddy Miller, a longtime Avon resident, in memory of his wife, Alice Fowles. Today, visitors are able to enjoy a visitor center, cafe, demonstration kitchen, and gift shop. The true gem of this preserve is the expansive conservatory, the first built in Lorain County. The conservatory is home to plant specimens hailing from around the world. Visitors are encouraged to follow the paths that wind around the conservatory while taking in the breathtaking gardens, including a spectacular orchid collection, desert plants, ferns, bromeliads, bonsai, cycads, palms, and other tropical plants. The conservatory is open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. There is a $2 daily admission fee to the conservatory only. Culinary classes are held in the demonstration kitchen, located in the visitor center. There is also an outdoor event patio where local musicians often perform on summer nights. Visitors interested in sustainability will be pleased to know that many aspects of the Visitor’s Center were constructed to follow the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design standards to ensure it is truly a greenspace. These features include water conservation, decreased heat emission, and conservation of construction materials. The preserve is also home to a butterfly house, which gives visitors the opportunity to learn how these fascinating creatures make the transition from caterpillar to butterfly. After exploring the grounds of the preserve, visitors can stop in at The Orchid Café to enjoy refreshments.
